The existing literature classifies trade types as one-way and twoway (intra-industry) trade, and analyzes two-way trade under two headings that are horizontal and vertical intra-industry trade. The authors also follow the same categorization and focus on commodity groups in which production sharing is expanding globally by employing disaggregated trade data. The intra-industry trade model given by Krugman is indeterminate in one sense. This model, no doubt, leads to the inference that one half of the range of product varieties will be produced by each country, yet it is unable to tell which varieties will be produced by each country. Aquino, A. (1978). ‘Intra-Industry Trade and Intra-Industry Specialisation as Concurrent Sources of International Trade in Manufactures’, Weltwirtschaftliches Archiv, 114, 275–95.

Although intra-industry trade is very important, it is difficult to reconcile with theories based on comparative advantage. Also note that while external economies of scale can account for trade between similar countries, models with external economies of scale predict extreme intra-industry trade should also be important. There are two types of intra-industry trade, horizontal (the exchange of similar goods) and vertical (the exchange of inputs for more processed outputs). A characteristic of central planning was extensive vertical integration of production and standardization of products, both inputs and final goods. In intra-industry trade, the level of worker productivity is not determined by climate or geography.
